Recommended Student Computer Specifications

Overview

Students should have a Windows or Mac computer that meets current performance standards. Chromebooks and tablets may be useful supplemental devices but should not be used as a primary computer because some courses require software and testing tools that are not supported on those devices.

Standard Computer Specifications

For most academic programs, students should have:

  • Processor: Intel Core i5 (12th Generation or newer), AMD Ryzen 5 (7000 Series or newer), or Apple M2 or newer.

  • Memory: 16 GB RAM minimum; 32 GB preferred.

  • Storage: 256 GB SSD minimum.

  • Operating System: Current supported Microsoft Windows or current supported macOS version.

  • Networking: Wi-Fi 6 or newer.

  • Webcam and Microphone: Required for online classes, testing, and virtual collaboration. A second webcam may be required for online proctoring.

  • Software: Microsoft 365 provided by your College registration using your myNOVA (VCCS) account at no additional cost, current web browser, and antivirus protection.

  • Internet Access: Reliable broadband internet access.

Specialized Programs (IET, CAD, Engineering, GIS, and Similar Programs)

Students in programs that use engineering, drafting, or design software should consider higher-performance systems:

  • Processor: Intel Core i7/Ultra 7 or AMD Ryzen 7.

  • Memory: 32 GB RAM recommended; 64 GB preferred.

  • Storage: 1 TB SSD recommended.

  • Graphics: Dedicated NVIDIA RTX or equivalent graphics card when required by the program.

  • Operating System: Current supported Microsoft Windows; GIS students should use Windows-based systems whenever possible.

Additional Notes

  • Chrome or Edge are recommended; Chrome generally provides the best compatibility with academic resources.

  • Reliable broadband internet is recommended; mobile hotspots may not be sufficient for testing or video-intensive coursework.

  • A three-year warranty or accidental damage plan is recommended when affordable.

  • Course-specific requirements may exceed these recommendations; students should consult their academic program or instructor.
