Set Up myNOVA (VCCS) MFA – Time-Based One Time Password (TOTP) Notification with the Microsoft Authenticator App

Overview

This article details the steps to set up myNOVA (VCCS) Multi-factor Authentication (MFA) with Time-Based One Time Password (TOTP) notification with the Microsoft Authenticator App using your mobile device.

Note: The Microsoft Authenticator App is ADA compliant and recommended for users with disabilities. The App is compatible with various assistive technologies, including screen readers, making it accessible for users with visual impairments.

Edit Profile Settings

Note: You must enter your mobile number in SIS to set up and use MFA. Follow these instructions to enter your mobile number in SIS.

  1. Go to https://nvcc.my.vccs.edu/.

  2. Enter your myNOVA (VCCS) username and click the GO button.

  1. Enter your myNOVA (VCCS) password and click the GO button.

  1. Click the  icon at the top of the Applications page and select Reset TOTP.

  1. Click the Yes button when prompted.

  1. Click the  icon at the top of the Applications page and select Profile Settings.

  1. Click the Edit Profile button when prompted.

  1. Select the MFA TOTP checkbox, select Authenticator - TOTP as your preferred authentication method, and click the Save button.

Note: If Authenticator - TOTP does not display as an available preferred authentication method in the drop-down menu, first click the Save button and then repeat Steps 6-8.

Note: It is highly recommended you select multiple authentication methods as options to ensure a backup in case of any issues.

Set Up the Microsoft Authenticator App

  1. Go to https://nvcc.my.vccs.edu/.

  2. Enter your myNOVA (VCCS) username and click the GO button.

  1. Enter your myNOVA (VCCS) password and click the GO button.

  1. Select the Microsoft Authenticator App. If you do not have the App, scan the QR code to download the app and click the NEXT button. If you already have the App, click the NEXT button.

Note: The following steps detail using the Microsoft Authenticator App on an iPhone. Steps and screens may vary based on the device used.

  1. In the Microsoft Authenticator App, tap the + icon in the upper right corner.

  2. Tap Work or school account.

Note: If you are prompted to allow the app to access, tap Allow so the authenticator app can access your camera to take a picture of the QR code in the next step.

  1. Tap Scan QR Code.

  1. Scan the QR code with the Microsoft Authenticator App.

  1. Click the NEXT button in the screen.

  1. Enter the One Time Password displayed in the Microsoft Authenticator App into the screen that displays.

Note: Select the Remember this computer for 30 days checkbox to not be prompted again for the TOTP code for 30 days.

  1. Click the GO button to complete the MFA TOTP set up.

Sign In to myNOVA (VCCS) using MFA with TOTP

  1. Go to https://nvcc.my.vccs.edu/.

  2. Enter your myNOVA (VCCS) username and click the GO button.

  1. Enter your myNOVA (VCCS) password and click the GO button.

  1. Open the Microsoft Authenticator App.

  2. Enter the One Time Password displayed in the Microsoft Authenticator App into the screen that displays.

Note: Select the Remember this computer for 30 days checkbox to not be prompted again for the TOTP code for 30 days.

  1. Click the GO button to complete the sign in to myNOVA (VCCS) using MFA with TOTP.
