Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)

What is it?

Multi-factor authentication (MFA) is a layered approach to securing data and applications where a system requires a user to present a combination of two or more credentials to verify their identity for login. MFA increases security because even if one credential becomes compromised, unauthorized users will be unable to meet the second authentication requirement and will not be able to access the protected IT service. The two factors NVCC utilizes are: something you know (password) and something you have (authentication app with push notification or text notification).

MFA for myNOVA (VCCS) requires you to provide two or more verification methods to access critical tools using your myNOVA (VCCS) account (i.e., Canvas, SIS, and Zoom).

MFA for NVCC requires you to provide two or more verification methods to access critical systems governed by NVCC accounts (i.e., SharePoint, Teams, Outlook Email, eForms, etc.).

Who is Eligible to Use It?

MFA services are in place for Students, Faculty, and Staff.

The type of secondary factor you will use (authentication app/text notification) may vary based on your role at NVCC.

MFA for myNOVA (VCCS) accounts: uses the Rapid Identity mobile application for pushing secondary authentication notifications.

MFA for NVCC IT Accounts (LAN accounts): uses the Microsoft Authenticator mobile application for pushing secondary authentication notifications.
